Office Desk vs Gaming Desk: What’s the Difference?

Office Desk

A desk isn’t always just a desk. Whether you’re putting the final touches on the spreadsheet for work or you’re in the home stretch of an hours-long gaming marathon, having the right desk for your needs is important. Now that a lot of people are working from home, it is important that all employees have access to a good desk at their home. Lots of businesses are offering their employees an employee purchase program where they can buy office equipment at a discounted price. However, there’s a lot of choices out there, too. So many, in fact, that you might end up with paralysis by analysis.

So we’ll try to keep it simple for you. There are two main types of desks out there: office and gaming desks. Of course, now you might be thinking, “Is there really a difference between the two?”

Well of course there is. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be reading this article.

So, here are some of the main differences between office and gaming desks.

Adjustability

In general, gaming desks offer more options for adjustability. Gaming desks can let you fiddle with the height or tabletop angle, and some even can adjust their entire configuration. Gamers spend a lot of time at their gaming station, so having a variety of options for adjusting their setup can reduce neck and/or eye strain.

There are some office desks that offer height adjustments, but these are mostly of the standing vs. sitting variety. The idea here being that a person won’t spend as much time at their office desk as a gamer does at their gaming desk. So the adjustability advantage goes to gaming desks.

Comfort

Once again, the general consensus is that gamers spend far more time at their desks than office workers do. Is it really surprising considering the explosion of eSports and gaming livestreams? Because of this, gaming desks once again edge out office desks in terms of comfort and ergonomics.

Gaming desks often have rounded edges, smooth surfaces, and other features that lessen the physical strain of being at a desk for hours on end. Office desks are more practical in their construction choices. Not that it’s a bad thing; this kind of functional practicality can encourage productivity. Even if that encouragement is to finish up work so you can go to your gaming desk and play some games.

Durability

A fully-decked out gaming PC can weigh upwards of 60 pounds. And that’s just the case. Add in a couple of 4K monitors, keyboard, gaming mouse, and the occasional angry gamer fist. You can see why gaming desks are typically built to withstand quite a bit of strain.  They can be constructed out of a wide variety of materials, including tempered glass, strong hardwoods, and sometimes even steel.

That’s not to say that there aren’t sturdy office desks out there. A full office set up (PC, monitors, maybe a phone, printer, scanner, etc.) can pack on the weight, too. A robust office desk can withstand weights up to (and sometimes more than) 400 pounds. If you have concerns over the strength of your desk, make sure you look for the “Max Load Capacity” in the product description.

Style and Customization

Gamers like shiny things. It makes sense, then, that some gaming desks are brightly colored or have LED light strips built in. There are even some companies that can custom-build gaming desks to exact specifications. They can be customised by color, material of construction, and really any other aspect.

Of course, an office desk doesn’t need to be as flamboyant. Most are reserved in flat colors or natural woodgrains. Of course, it is also possible to get a custom-made office desk. But with an already wide selection of office desks available, it’s more likely that you’ll be able to find an office desk that fits your needs.

Cost

This is the big one. With all of the other factors taken into consideration, it’s no wonder that gaming desks are more expensive than office desks, in general. With top-notch adjustability, durability, comfort, style, and customisation, if you want these features, you’ll be paying for them in a gaming desk.

On the other hand, it’s pretty easy to find a low-cost office desk. There are any number of websites and stores that have a wide variety of office desks in stock. A quick google search for “office desk” will yield you over 2 BILLION results, whereas a search for “gaming desk” only leaves you with about 340 million.

So, what should I get: an office desk or a gaming desk?

Ultimately, it’s going to be a matter of preference and how much you’re willing to spend. A gaming desk is like a custom-tailored, bespoke suit, while an office desk is a standard off-the-rack suit. Both will definitely get the job done. It’s up to you to figure out what you’re looking for and your budget. If you are looking for a bulk office desk purchase for your workplace, then wholesale office desk offers are what you need.
