Strategies To Score More Than 90% Marks In class 12 physics

Class 12 physics is one of the most feared subjects among students. With the right approach and strategies, you can easily master this subject. It requires conceptual understanding and logical solving abilities. It needs knowledge of theories, visualization, and application of knowledge and formulas. All this along with practical-based numerical problems might seem difficult to a lot of students. Physical science abbreviated as physics is a multifaceted subject that requires the application of numerous skills to excel. It not only requires a good understanding of concepts along with a strong base but also hands-on learning and practical based skills. Students often find themselves excelling in one while lacking in others, giving in to its fearful reputation. Don’t be discouraged, you have an extra tool at hand now. This guide! This is a tried and tested guide made specifically for class 12 physics examinations which will help you strategize and bag more than 90% in less than ten steps. 

Understand the syllabus 

The first and foremost step here is to understand the syllabus. Spend some time on the index page itself. Look at each chapter and understand what it is trying to teach you. Know the weightage given to each topic in the syllabus and plan your learning according to it. NCERT Class 12 physics syllabus is broadly divided into two parts, that is, classical physics and modern physics. Classical physics has chapters like magnetism and electrostatics whereas Modern Physics has semiconductors. Modern Physics has fewer mathematical components so for students who are a bit weaker in maths, should start studying with semiconductors as it is as important, even more so than the others.

 

NCERT Class 12 physics textbook has 10 units comprising a total of 15 chapters. The first unit is Electrostatics with chapters,

Chapter 1: Electric Charges and Fields 

Chapter 2: Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance 

The first unit carries a total of 12 marks in the exam paper.

 

 The second unit is Current & Electricity which is just one chapter of the same name, that is, Chapter 3: Current & Electricity. 

This unit carries 3 marks. 

 

The third unit is Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism which has chapters

Chapter 4: Moving Charges and Magnetism

Chapter 5: Magnetism and Matter

carrying a total of 8 marks. 

 

The fourth unit is Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents with chapters 

Chapter 6: Electromagnetic Induction

Chapter 7: Alternating Current

also carrying a total of 8 marks

The fifth unit is Electromagnetic Waves comprising of a single chapter of the same name, that is, 

Chapter 8: Electromagnetic Waves

carrying a total of 4 marks 

 

The sixth unit is Optics, one of the most important units comprising chapters

Chapter 9: Ray Optics and Optical Instruments

Chapter 10: Wave Optics

carrying a total of 13 marks 

 

The seventh unit is Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter which consists of a single chapter of the same name, that is,

Chapter 11: Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter

carrying a total of 4 marks

 

The eighth unit is Atoms and Nuclei with chapters

Chapter 12: Atoms

Chapter 13: Nuclei

carrying a total of 6 marks in the question paper.

 

The ninth unit is Electronic Devices one of the most important units of modern physics, 

Chapter 14: Semiconductor Electronics: Materials, Devices, and Simple Circuits

carrying a total of 8 marks.

 

And the tenth unit is, Communication Systems with a single chapter of the same name,

Chapter 15: Communication Systems

carrying a total of 4 marks in the exam paper.

 

The total is 70 marks. Now that you have a clear idea of how important each chapter is, you should plan to study them accordingly. You should not waste much time on easier chapters such as communication systems.  Utilise that precious time in solving electrostatic numerical problems.

If you are well versed with NCERT there is no actual need for reference books to score more than 90% in boards but if you are interested and want to obtain a better grasp of the concepts some books that can be used for reference are Concepts of Physics by HC Verma, Objective Physics by D.C. Pandey, Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick and Walker.

 

Theory and Derivations 

Students should be well versed with the theory part provided in the textbook. Important definitions along with formulae should be highlighted and noted in separate books. This is an easy way to score in short answer questions. Experiments illustrating different concepts should be listed. Do not mug up derivations however attractive that might be, mugging up definitions will only prove detrimental to you. Derivations are the easiest way to score marks in boards exams. Try and understand the logic behind derivations. Derivations when understood with logic and a basic understanding of concepts will come naturally to you and you won’t even have to spend a lot of time on them. Understanding derivations properly will also help you to solve numerical problems of different types. 

 

Numericals 

Before jumping into the difficult and the twisted questions present at the end of the chapter and being discouraged by your inability to solve them, it is necessary for students to solve the solved examples first. For first few questions, you can look at the solution to understand the different approaches each numerical requires. Moving on from that, you should solve even the solved examples by yourself first and then look at the solution. These examples are extremely important as they most likely end up on the question paper. For the end of the chapter numerical problems, online NCERT solutions can provide you the right assistance and will guide you through different approaches. High-order thinking miscellaneous problems should not be ignored. Regular practice of numerical problems is required to score high in the paper.

 

Doubts 

“Doubt everything and find your own light”. It is extremely important to have doubts and get them cleared in physics. Doubt is the basis on which science originated. Doubt strengthens your foundation and increases your confidence in the subject. If you have no doubts it means you had no foundation, to begin with. Don’t shy away, ask the silliest doubts. Teachers are only there to help you out. 

 

Pictorial/ Graphical illustration

Pictorial representation of problems is expected of students in the long answer type questions. You don’t have to be an artist to draw in physics. Basic shapes and adequate labeling are enough. Pictorial representations help you to assess the question better and it helps the examiner to assess your answer better. Students should practice numerical along with drawings. Supplementing physics answers with pictorial or graphical illustrations is usually effective in the exam. Not only does it make your answer look relevant, but it also boosts your overall percentage as well.
